Summary
[Destroyed in the fire of 2015] Oil painting on canvas, Southern-Mouthed Hounds, by Francis Barlow (Lincolnshire c.1626 - London 1704), early 1660s. The hounds, mostly white with black markings, are disposed in a frieze and are picking up the scent and hunting to the right. The hare is seen by a tree in the right foreground.
Provenance
Possibly painted for Denzil Onslow, MP (1640/1–1721) of Pyrford, and possibly included in his bequest to his great-nephew, Thomas, 2nd Baron Onslow (1679–1740), of Clandon, where it was probably one of those recorded by Horace Walpole in 1764. Marked in Lady Iveagh’s 1966 Inventory, p 18. Accepted by the Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty on the death of Lady Iveagh in 1968 and transferred to the National Trust (1968 Schedule B)
