Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Christian Simpson, Reverend James Wills (fl.1746 – London 1777) Probably the portrait of an old nurse or companion. A small whole figure of a venerable woman seated in a red chair, facing the spectator. She leans her right elbow on a table and holds her eye-glass. She is dressed in light brown, with a large white apron, white kerchief, frills and cap tied under her chin. A window is to the left, and a small black and white terrier on the ground. At the back is written: Christian Simpson aged 78 on the 14th of June, 1746.
