Summary
Oil painting on panel, Portrait of Sir Robert Cecil, Knight. 1600, manner of Marcus Geeraerts, the younger (Bruges 1561/2 - London 1635/6) Attired in a black velvet suit, with a small ruff, and round his neck the ribbon and badge of the George. A white wand in his left hand, and the right rests on the table on which are some letters, a bag for seals of office, and a silver bell. One of the letters in addressed: “~to the right honourable Sr. Robert Cecil knight principal Secretary unto her Ma., Master of the Cort of Wards. (etc., illegible)../..K.G” In the top left corner is the Cecil motto: “Sero sed Serio”, and the in the top right their arms, surrounded by the collar of the Garter. The date 1600 in the left corner may have been added later, as Robert Cecil was not knighted by Queen Elizabeth until 1601.
