Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Thomas Osborne, 1st Earl of Danby, later 1st Duke of Leeds (1631 - 1712) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723) and Studio, 1689-94. A portrait of the Osborne, facing left in Garter robes, plumed hat on table right and holding a cane. Another version is at Holkham Hall, Norfolk. The sitter was previously called James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde (1665 - 1745) and catalogued as English School, early 18th century.
Provenance
According to Alice Pennant, 1902:bought by George Hay Dawkins Pennant at Christie's, 9 July 1819, for £3-12-0 but no known sale recorded. Or ?Lord Townshend's sale (4 June 1819 at Robins); thence by descent to Hugh Napier Douglas Pennant, 4th Baron Penrhyn of Llangedai (1894 – 1949), who left Penryhn and its estates to his niece, Lady Janet Marcia Rose Pelham (1923 - 1997), who with her husband John Charles Harper, thereupon assumed the name of Douglas Pennant, and in 1951 made over the castle and part of its contents in lieu of death-duties to HM Treasury (from the estate of Hugh, 4th Baron Penrhyn (1894 – 1949), which transferred them to the National Trust for display at Penrhyn Castle, 1961.
