Caption
John Buckle was a Whig, and alderman, Sheriff of Norfolk in 1787, and Mayor of Norwich in 1793. He is here shown writing in his daybooks, presumably for his various trades as ironmonger, tobacconist and colourman. His trade sign was a Golden Pipe. He died without a will at his house in Hethersett, Norfolk, aged 70, leaving all to his only son, and next of kin, Thomas Starling Buckle, rector of Bramerton. The sitter was also the uncle of Anne Buckle, Mrs Cremer, whose portrait is similarly at Felbrigg, where this hangs.
