Caption
The gold and blue sash worn by the sitter suggests that he had taken service with the Dutch, after the failure of the Royalist cause. The identity of the sitter is uncertain, but if it is Sir John Cremer, he probably appears at Felbrigg because of his appointment as Sheriff of Norfolk in 1660. He was the eldest son of George Cremer of Seche and Elizabeth, daughter of Adam Williamson of Keswick. His first wife was Sarah, daughter of the Royalist Sir Edward Filmer, whom he married in 1638. He married his second wife, Ursula Fabian, in 1661/2.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Unknown Royalist in a Cuirass possibly Sir John Cremer (d.c.1667/8). Painted oval. Half-length portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a breastplate, white lace cravat and red and white sleeves. One of the finest portraits from Beeston. It dates from the 1650s, and the blue-and-gold sash suggests that the sitter had taken service with the Dutch, after the failure of the Royalist cause.
