This ‘drollerie’ (amusing piece), is a typical English imitation of Dutch 17th – century paintings, in particular of those painted by the immigrant Egbert van Heemskerk (c.1635-1704).

There are two 3/4 length figures, on the left a cobbler mending a shoe, on the right a man in a hat holds a paper. A companion to FEL/P/105.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969).
