Caption
This ‘drollerie’ (amusing piece), is a typical English imitation of Dutch 17th – century paintings, in particular of those painted by the immigrant Egbert van Heemskerk (c.1635-1704). The frisson between the two figures, and the look in the friar’s eye, gives the picture an overtly anti-clerical slant.
