Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Landscape with a Castle on a Hill by Franz de Paula Ferg (Vienna 1689 – London 1737), signed F. ferg f (one of a pair, NT/UPP/P/142b is other). The castle stands in the summit of a precipitous rock at the right, around which winds a river; a group of figures and a horseman on the river bank in the foreground. Austrian by birth, Ferg came to England in about 1718, and turned out quantities of small, precious landscapes in the Netherlandish manner.
