Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Bay of Naples looking towards Posillipo, by Tommaso Ruiz (fl.1740), signed bottom left: Tomaso Ruiz F., circa 1740/55. From a set of five Neapolitan views probably bought by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh on his Grand Tour. Nothing is known of Ruiz, whose name suggests a Spanish origin. (NT/UPP/P/141a, b, d are others in set. One was destroyed in 1989). A similar work, dated 1740, is in the Government Art Collection (GAC 10657).

Presumably by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh when he was in Italy, 1749-51; purchased by the National Trust from the Trustees of the late R.J. Meade-Fetherstonhaugh, Esq. in 1978
