Summary
Oil paintingo n canvas, Harbour Scene - Evening (after Claude-Joseph Vernet) by Charles François Lacroix (c.1700 - Berlin 1782), signed and dated on barrel: Gr De Lacroix fct Romae 1751. A copy of Vernet's P/121b in Dining Room. One of three excellent contemporary copies by a former assistant of Vernet, after the paintings in the Dining Room (NT/UPP/P/121a-d), perhaps commmissioned by Sir Matthew when Vernet himself was unable to produce original compositions. The fourth copy was lost in the fire at Uppark on 30th August 1989.
