Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sarah Lethieullier, Lady Fetherstonhaugh (1722-1788), with the Branch of a Pear by Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (Lucca 1708 – Rome 1787), signed and dated (Rome), lower far right, on the trunk of the tree: P. B• 1751. A three-quarter-length portrait, to right, head turned over right shoulder, wearing a pink cloak and blue dress, a branch of a pear tree held in her left hand, a pear in her right. The daughter of Christopher Lethieullier and Sarah Lascelles, she married Matthew Fetherstonhaugh in 1746. By Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787).
Provenance
Possibly commissioned by Benjamin Lethieullier (1728/9–1797) of his sister; thence by bequest (?) to Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh, 2nd Bt (1754–1846), but apparently not hung at Uppark (or, at least, not in the ground-floor apartment), since not in the early 19th-century hanging-plans, nor in H. R. Bolton’s bill for cleaning pictures in 1849; thereafter, by inheritance and descent, until accepted in lieu of tax on the death of Admiral the Hon. Sir Herbert Meade-Fetherstonhaugh (1875-1964) in 1965, and transferred to the National Trust by HM Treasury, September 1990
