Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Agony in the Garden, after Giuseppe Cesari, known as Cavaliere d'Arpino (Aprino 1568 - Rome 1640). Christ, kneeling on a mound at the left, is illuminated by the light that radiates from the angel bearing the cross. In the foreground the three apostles are sleeping; in the right background a group of soldiers with St Peter are seen in the moonlight. The original is in the Allen Memorial Art Gallery, Oberlin, Ohio and another painting by the same hand, with some affinities, is in the National Museum of Wales.
Provenance
Early 19th century hanging-plans in the Little Parlour: '2. Garden of Gethsemane or Christ's Agony in the Garden Domenchion' [left of chimney piece]; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury on the death of Admiral the Hon. Sir Herbert Meade-Fetherstonhaugh (1875-1964) in 1965 and transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury, September 1990
