Summary
One of a pair of ewers, porcelain, of oviform body, tall neck and widening rim and spout, with a strap handle on the side, made in Arita, Hizen Province, Japan, 1670–80, decorated in underglaze blue in the style of Chinese kraak porcelain of the late 16th to early 17th century with lobed and pointed panels with vignettes of flowering plants on a ground of stylised scrolling foliage (karakusa 唐草 'Chinese grasses'), with additional stylised flowers and foliage on the neck and the handle and tri-lobed wish-fulfilling symbols (nyoi 如意) under the rim.
