Summary
Bottom drawer from a mid- to late 17th century walnut commode, or cassetone, circa 1670, North Italian, probably Lombardy, (NT13591.1). Drawer front crudely carved with leaves having two circular metal flat knob handles which may be replacements. There is some evidence of woodworm and of there once being a lock with keyhole centrally placed in the drawer front. The front edge of the drawer front is edged with wooden beading which partially covers the through dovetails. The base of the drawer is made up of five pieces of varying sized all split in some way an fixed to the sides with handmade nails. Second piece is marked underneath in pencil, 4. The third piece has a characature of a policeman wearing a helmet drawn in pencil on the underside. The back of the drawer has roughly cut dovetails.
