Summary
Second drawer from a mid- to late 17th century walnut commode, or cassetone, circa 1670, North Italian, probably Lombardy, (NT13591.1). Drawer front crudely carved with leaves having two circular metal flat knob handles which may be replacements. There is some evidence of woodworm and of there once being a lock with keyhole centrally placed in the drawer front. The front edge of the drawer front is edged with wooden beading which partially covers the through dovetails. (Missing from right edge). The base of the drawer is made up of seven different sized pieces of timber all fixed to the sides with handmade nails. Crudely marked in pencil, 3. The back of the drawer has roughly cut dovetails and a repair fixed with nails. This drawer is supported by a replacement runner on the left.
Provenance
Purchased from the estate of the late Lord Wraxall with the assistance of the NHMF and donations from members and supporters.
