Summary
Top drawer from a mid- to late 17th century walnut commode, or cassetone, circa 1670, North Italian, probably Lombardy, (NT13591.1). Drawer front crudely carved with leaves having two circular metal flat knob handles which may be replacements. There is some evidence of woodworm and of there once being a lock with keyhole centrally placed in the drawer front. The front of the drawer front is edged with wooden beading which partially covers the through dovetails. The base of the drawer is made up of three different sized pieces of timber all fixed to the sides with handmade nails. The back of the drawer shows sign of woodworm with roughly cut dovetails and a repair fixed with nails.
Provenance
Purchased from the estate of the late Lord Wraxall with the assistance of the NHMF and donations from members and supporters.
