Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Possibly Sir Charles Yate, 3rd Bt (c.1634-c.1680), as a young man, attributed to Pieter Borsseler (fl. London 1664 - Middleburg 1687), circa 1664, inscribed bottom left (later script): SR. JOHN TATE BART. OF BUCKLAND COM. BERKS DIED 1690. A portrait of a young man standing full-length in an interior by a column, his left hand on his hip, his right arm resting on a table on which is globe, book and pair of divders. He is dresed in black with white sleeves showing through, with a white collar and gold-embroidered bows on his arms and shoes.
Provenance
Presumably by descent and inheritance through the sitter’s daughter, Mary, Lady Throckmorton; purchased by the National Trust in 1993 through private treaty sale with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
