Summary
One of a pair of postillion boots made from thick black leather. They have a rounded toe, heel with stacked leather held in place with 20 wooden pegs. The soles are straights. There are rowelled spurs held in place with thick leather straps across front of the boot. The strap under the foot appears to be missing. There is a short back strap and 2 leather loops inside each boot. There is an incised circular mark on one heel - possibly reading 'DE PARIS'. See also SNO 2085. The photograph is by W G Parker and Co, 288 High Holborn, London WC - chlorobromide print, possibly selenium toned. Size 34 mm (13 in). (male) Wade Catalogue number D.7. High boots of very stout leather. Thick soles & small spurs, attached with straps & iron buckle. Said to have belonged to the postillion of the Empress Maria Theresa and were found in a walled up cupboard in his house. From the collections of M.L.
