Summary
Stomacher - Part of a cream silk robe with ground pattern of meandering lace ribbons and large isolated sprays of flowers and leaves brocaded in multicoloured silk and silver thread. Point entre weave. bodice and sleeves lined with bleached linen covered with a white cotton sateen at later date. 2 bones centre back. Sack cut. Robings on bodice only. Triple flounce on sleeves. Skirt pieced with gores, slightly trained. Trimmings of silver lace of torchon design, possibly Spanish - on robings round sleeves, serpentine line down skirt front, flounces - over original ruched trim. Three net flounces edges Alencon lace c. 1750. 5 modern metal hooks on dress as fastenings. Original lining covered with white cotton. The whole dress is very pieced. The silk has been used for a dress of an earlier date. Petticoat; Silver-run corded, cream silk. Back lined glazed wool. Pleated all round towards sides, stitched onto silk tape which extends into ties. Pocket slits each side. Flounce of dress fabric at front. Also wide band of silver lace. Hem edged with silver lace. Stomacher; made up from extra fabric. Boned and backed with gauze. English. 1755. Petticoat - silver run corded cream silk. 19 in/48 cms. (female)
