Caption
This is a still life, with basket of plums, figs, peaches on a stone ledge with a cantaloup melon. Linard was one of the prime exponents of French still-life paintings and his works shows the influence of both Italian and Netherlandish prototypes. This painting, however, is distinctly French in its economy and elegance of composition. After Linard's death, and the foundation of the Academie Royale (of Panting and Sculpture) in 1648, still-life painting suffered a demise in France as its unpretentious subject matter was considered inferior to historical and mythological themes. Today the painting can be found at Snowshill and, along with Still Life with an Earthenware Jug and Basket of Apples attributed to Linard was bought by Charles Paget Wade and sits happily with a vast collection of craftmanship and curios he acquired.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Still Life with Fruit, Jacques Linard (Paris 1597 – Paris 1645), signed and dated: Is LINARD and on centre of lower ledge: 1635. A still life, with basket of plums, figs, peaches on a stone ledge with a cantaloup melon. Linard was one of the prime exponents of French still-life paintings and his works shows the influence of both Italian and Netherlandish prototypes. This painting, however, is distinctly French in its economy and elegance of composition. After Linard's death, and the foundation of the Acedmie Royale (of Panting and Sculpture) in 1648, still-life painting suffered a demise in France as its unpretentious subject matter was considered inferior to historical and mythological themes. Today the painting can be found in the room called Zenith at Snowshill and, along with Still Life with an Earthenware Jug and Basket of Apples attributed to Linard in Ann's Room, was bought between 1900 and 1951 by Charles Wade and sits happily with a vast collection of craftmanship and curios acquired during these same years.
