Caption
John Hoppner was an imitator of Reynolds, though a competent and celebrated artist in his own right. This portrait was painted in the year that the 3rd Duke (John Frederick Sackville, 1745-1799) and Duchess were married. They had one son, who would later become the 4th Duke of Dorset, and two daughters. In 1801, the Duchess married her second husband, the diplomat Sir Charles (later created Earl) Whitworth (1752-1825), but continued to use her earlier title.
