Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Possibly Lady Isabella Sackville, Countess of Northampton (1622-1661), follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). A full-length portrait of a young woman standing on a patterned carpet, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, her brown hair falling in ringlets on her shoulders, wearing a black dress with white lawn cuffs, and pearl ornaments, holding a rose in her left hand resting on her belly; a vase of roses on a pedestal, right. Dark brown hair, blue/grey eyes. Patterned interior wall on the left, and a cloudy sky on the right. Formerly catalogued as Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset (1590-1676) or Lady Frances Cranfield, Countess of Dorset (d.1687)'. Inscribed on base of pedestal 'ANN. DAUGHTER AND SOLE / HEIRESS TO GEORGE CLIFFORD / EARL.E OF CUMBERLAND & WIFE / TO RICHARD SACKVILL EARL / OF DORSET'.
