Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Joseph Addison (1672-1719) by Charles Jervas (Dublin 1675 – London 1739), signed and dated 1714. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, his right hand across his chest, his left hand by his side holding a fold of his cloak wrapped around his hips, in a long powdered wig and wearing a dark blue coat and open-necked white shirt. A book is propped on a table on the left, with a letter beside it.

Recorded in the 1799 inventory as "Addison 3 by Jarvis" in the Dining Parlour; in the 1828 inventory, in the Dining Room, no.16; on loan from the Trustees of the Sackville Estate
