Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Robert Spencer, 2nd Earl of Sunderland (1641-1702) by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680). A three-quarter-length portrait as a young man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, seated, long shoulder-length brown wig, wearing a light-brown satin cloak and white collar and sleeves. He is seated in front of a stone pillar on the right, a massive stone wall behind him and a distant view of a landscape with cloudy sky on the left.

Purchased by the National Trust from the Sackville family in 1988 with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
