Caption
Lionel Cranfield is shown here in his robes as Lord Treasurer, a position to which he was appointed by James I in 1621. He was created Earl of Middlesex in 1622. However, he was then dismissed as Lord Treasurer for ‘corrupt practices’ in 1624. His daughter married the 5th Earl of Dorset in 1637 and as a result, his collections from Copt Hall came to Knole at the end of the 17th century. There is another portrait of the 1st Earl at Knole, also by Mytens (see no. 129887).
