Jar and cover, part of a three-piece garniture, earthenware with tin-glaze (Delft faience), of baluster shape, painted in cobalt blue after Chinese porcelain mid-17th century Transitional ware originals, with scholars, courtiers and a nude female figure riding an elephant, representing Africa, between lappet bands, unmarked, Delft, the Netherlands, c. 1685-1700.
