Summary
A set of six carved walnut high-back chairs, Dutch, late 17th/early 18th century, in the style of Daniel Marot, each chair with a top rail heavily carved with a crown and S-scrolls, the central shaped and pierced back splat carved with flowers and leaves, the lower shaped back rail with ridged moulding, the moulding pattern extending up the uprights, the seat with shaped front apron and covered with needlework upholstery depicting animals, flowers and leaves with beige trim, on front S-scroll legs terminating in hoof feet, the front legs joined to the turned and block rear legs with shaped and moulded stretchers, the side stretchers joined be a scroll-form shaped stretcher.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. These chairs are listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
