Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A View of Windsor Castle from the River Thames, attributed to Jan Vorsterman (Zalt-Bommel c.1643 - ? Constantinople after 1685), circa 1690. The landscape shows the whole panorama of the castle on the hill. On the tree-lined roadway which runs through the park below the castle is a coach and horses with other mounted figures. The river running across the front of the painting is busy with all sorts of boats from small fishing craft to royal barges. Cows are seen sitting in the immediate foreground in the right-hand corner. One of several versions of the same view by the artist, another of which is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
Provenance
Astley family tradition has it that it was a gift from Charles II in recognition of its support in the Civil War although the 19th century suggests that this is a family myth; accpeted in lieu, 2011/12
