Watteau became famous for his compositions known as fêtes champêtres, depicting cavorting figures in pleasure gardens. The main figures in this composition are derived from those in Watteau’s L’Assemblé dans le parc in the Louvre, Paris.

Oil painting on canvas, Figures in a Park near a Fountain, after Jean-Antoine Watteau (Valenciennes 1684 - Paris 1721). C18th. A couple walking along a tree-lined avenue, the woman stopping to converse with a lady with a fan, seated on the grass, accompanied by a child; stone fountain to the left. The main figures are derived from those in 'L’Assemblé dans le parc' in the Louvre.

accepted in lieu of tax by H.M.Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 2009
