Summary
Chinese hardwood stand with a raised circular platform supported on five feet with circular stretchers. The stand is probably 18th century. It has a paper label that according to Ming Wilson, Senior Curator, Victoria and Albert Museum, reads ‘guan’ suggesting it has come from an official or imperial source. Laurence Paul (Ms), Fleurdelys Antiquites, London, noted that stands with surviving stretchers are rare. A Wedgwood and Bentley round cream bowl and cover for a dessert, creamware (Queen’s ware) have historically been placed on this stand (see National Trust Inventory Numbers 1270555.1 and 1270555.2) but the stand is not thought to be a component part of the bowl.
Provenance
May have entered into the collection in the 1860s along with the cloisonné wares from the Summer Palace (Yuan Ming Yuan) or perhaps was acquired by Commodore Anson in China in the mid-18th century.
