Oil painting on canvas, The Capture of Porto Bello by Admiral Edward Vernon with only Six Men o'War, November 22 1739, attributed to Pieter Monamy (London 1681 - Westminster 1749). On November 21, 1739, Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), with a force of 6 ships, 2,735 men, 370 cannons entered the harbour in Porto Bello, Panama. A label on the reverse is inscribed 'Hier Loom / of / John Vernon Esqr / of Wherstead Lodge / & Thurlow Hall / Suffolk'. John Vernon (1776-1818) was the nephew of Admiral Edward Vernon, the subject of the painting. John Vernon's seats were Great Thurlow Hall and Wherstead Park, Suffolk, Vernon having exchanged Orwell Park for Wherstead Park with his brother-in-law Sir Robert Harland in 1813.
