Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Mary Vernon, Mrs George (Adams) Anson (1739-1843) by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), payments made in 1763 and appointments for sitting recorded on April 16, 21, 27 and May 2nd 1764. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, seated beneath a tree on the right, turned slightly to the left, gazing to the left, her left arm on a stone ledge, her right hand resting on her left knee, dark brown hair, wearing a pink and white decollete wrap-over dress with a blue belt and cloak, a landscape setting with a distant view to the left.
Provenance
Accepted by H.M. Treasury in lieu of estate duties following the death of Thomas Edward Anson (1883 – 1960) the 4th Earl of Lichfield and given on loan to The National Trust for display at Shugborough Hall in March 1966. Transferred as a gift to The National Trust by H.M. Treasury on the 30th October 1984.
