Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Daniel Cunyngham (b.1701) by Mason Chamberlin the elder RA (London 1727 – Dorset 1787), inscribed on reverse of original canvas before relining: Dan. Cunyhma Nat. Julii. 30.1701 M: Canmberlin. pinxit: 1766. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing, in 17th century (Vandyck dress) dress, turned to the right, facing, his left hand resting on an upright book on a table, and his right arm resting on a ledge/chair, he has long grey wavy hair and is wearing black silk dress with wide white lace shoulder collar and cuffs, a red drape in the front to the left. A reference to a portrait of Cromwell in 17th century dress (looking more royalist), occurs in Ms. note of pictures bought 1850-70 (Anson archive, Stafford Record Office) and it is possible it refers to this picture.
