Provenance
Bought by 3rd Lord Lichfield, 1895: 'Portrait of Commodore Anson in Turban painted wether before or just after his voyage round the world. I bought this picture 1898 for £5 from th ewidow of a man who had bought it about fifty years before at a nobleman's sale in Kent and described in the catalogue of that sale as Commodore Anson. The man offered it to me twenty yeaes ago for £50 (as being by Hogarth). I believe it is definitely Commodore Anson. It is extremely like the print of him which I have, engraved by Grignion and painted by Pond..."; transferred to the National Trust with Shugborough’s park and contents of the state rooms, in part-payment of death-duties to the Treasury, following the death of Thomas, 4th Earl of Lichfield (1883 - 1960)
