Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Ruins, Shugborough by Nicholas Thomas Dall (fl.1748-1776/7), signed and dated NT Dall 1775. The ruins situated on the bank of the River Sow, at west front of Shugborough with figures and peacocks in the foreground. Ruins incoporate fragments of earlier buildings from the old palace of the Bishops of Lichfield at Shugborough. Hadrian's Arch stands on the rising ground at the left.
Provenance
Accepted by H.M. Treasury in lieu of estate duties following the death of Thomas Edward Anson (1883 – 1960) the 4th Earl of Lichfield and given on loan to The National Trust for display at Shugborough Hall in March 1966. Transferred as a gift to The National Trust by H.M. Treasury on the 30th October 1984.
