Summary
Saucer, one of seventeen, part of a 42-piece Meissen tea and coffee service, hard-paste porcelain, painted in enamels with gallants and companions in landscape vignettes after Watteau, with naturalistic flowers and insects on the underside and gold line bands. Makers mark of crossed swords in underglaze blue, gilder's marks and various pressnummers on underside. Circa 1745-50.
Provenance
Possibly among the Meissen purchased by Admiral Anson for Lady Anson in Amsterdam and Paris in 1750: '1 Dec 1750 - Lord Anson has bought Dresden china from Holland, a little French pendule for Mr. [Thomas] Anson...' (Staffordshire Records Office D615/PS/1/3/G), or in the 19th century. Given to the National Trust with Shugborough House and park on the death of the 4th Earl in 1960
