Summary
A Qianlong period 'famille rose' enamelled pear-shaped mug with the "Absent Master" pattern, with the attributes of a shepherd, his hat, a 'musette de cours' (bellows or bagpipe), two beribboned 'houlette' (crooks) with metal tips, unattended sheep and two pinning hounds awaiting his return gold details, Jingdezhen, China, painted in Guangdong (Canton), ca. 1743-47. Similar to the large armorial Anson service (1271545), but without the arms,palm or breadfruit tree.
Provenance
Possibly acquired by Commodore George Anson (1697 – 1762) during his circumnavigation of the globe in the HMS Centurion (1740 - 1744).
