Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of the Thames with the Old Palace of Whitehall looking towards Lambeth, British (English) School, early 17th century. Whitehall Stairs (the public landing stage) in the foreground, with the King's privy stairs behind; Lambeth Palace background left. This, apparently unique, early view of the royal palace at Whitehall is first recorded at Kingston Lacy in 1731, but was probably collected by Ralph Bankes. It, and its companion, NT 1257189 (KLA.P.148) may be copies of lost paintings by Cornelis Bol (active 1607-66), a topographical painter who was recorded in London 1635.
