Summary
Oil painting on panel (with red-ruddled back - indicating that it was in the collection in the 17th century), Shipping off a Coast in Rough Seas, possibly Jan Porcellis (Ghent c.1584 – Zoeterwoude 1632), early 17th century. This painting is possibly the picture listed as 'A Storme of Porcellis' in Ralph Bankes's list of his pictures at Gray's Inn in 1659, but re-framed in the 19th century. The taste for Porcellis's paintings in England seems to have been established by Charles I, who owned several, three of which survive at Hampton Court. In its unrestored state, it is difficult to decide whether this attribution to Porcellis is indeed the right one, or whether the picture is not rather by Aert van Antum (Antwerp 1580 - Amsterdam, 1620) - the name attached to it by Christie's when they did their inventory - by Andries Van Eertvelt (Antwerp 1590 - Antwerp 1692), or Hendrick Vroom (Haarlem 1566 - Haarlem 1640), the ultimate begetter of the idiom in which they all worked.
