Caption
According to the biblical story, David tells Saul how, as a young boy whilst out tending sheep, he would tackle a lion, if it threatened his flock, by its throat and kill it. He was proving his ability to take on the giant Goliath. It prefigures Christ’s victory over Satan This paintings was brought by William Bankes (1786–1855) for Kingston Lacy from a convent in Granada in 1814, as Samson and the Lion. It and its pendant, Moses and the Burning Bush, were good examples of this significant painter, whose works scarcely exist outside Spain.
