Caption
Moses, whilst out tending sheep in Mount Herob, saw a vision of God in a bush that burned with fire but was not consumed, according to the biblical story. He was by God told that he would take the Israelites out of Egypt and to a land of milk and honey. The bush was regarded as a prefiguration of the Virgin who bore Christ but was intact. This paintings was brought by William Bankes (1786–1855) for Kingston Lacy from a convent in Granada in 1814 with its pendant, David and the Lion, in order to have examples of this significant painter, whose works scarcely exist outside Spain.
