Caption
This painting on a wooden panel originally hung in a church in Valencia. It was brought to England in the early nineteenth century. The glass orb or globe under the Christ child's left foot identifies him in the rôle of Salvator Mundi or 'Saviour of the World'. The winged angels to left and right of the Madonna play the flute and guitar.
Summary
Oil painting on softwood panel, Madonna and Child with Music-making Angels by Francisco Ribalta (1565-1628). A horizontal view of the Madonna, half-length, centre in olive-green dress and red cloak, supports the naked Christ Child who stands on a table, his left foot on a glass ball and his left hand holding a crucifix; an angel to left and right, the left playing the flute and the right playing a lute.
