Caption
It is as we are looking through a keyhole at a woman seated at a table holding a sheet of paper, a musical score, and a man sitting next to her holding a candle. Ralph Bankes (1631?- 1677) bought this as a copy of the original painting by Dou, a pupil of Rembrandt in Leiden, then owned by the painter Sir Peter Lely before 1659 whilst he was still staying at Gray’s Inn, London. The original was subsequently bought by King James II and is still in the Royal Collection
