Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Altham, Mrs Ralph Hawtrey (1578-1647), manner of Cornelius Johnson (London 1593 - Utrecht 1661), circa 1630. A half-length portrait, in a painted oval, of the daughter of Edward Altham the elder (d. 1605) and Elizabeth Barne (d. 1621). Wearing a black-and-white dress with slashed sleeves, her mantle decorated with pearls and a ruff. She was the mother of Mary Hawtrey, 'Brave Dame Mary' who married Sir John Bankes (KLA/P/9) in 1618, and an aunt of Edward Altham (1629 - 1694), (KLA/P/70).
