Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Charlotte Dee, Mrs Charles Edmund Nugent (1756-1813), as Mrs Johnstone, an unfinished work by Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (Bristol 1769 – London 1830), 1789. A half-length portrait, facing, head inclined to the left, wearing a black and white dress and powdered hair. Garlick, in the Walpole Society, writes: 'According to family tradition [actually by a letter from a Mrs Carter to the sitter, recorded by Albert Bankes's manuscript, Parliamentary History, fol.20] painted in 1789, when the sitter was Mrs Johnstone'. She married secondly, in 1790, Capatin Charles Edmuund Nugent, who beacmeAdmiral of the Fleet in 1833 and was knighted in 1834. The portrait was left unfinished.
Provenance
Left unfinished by the artist and still in his studio at his death; delivered by his executors to the sitter's daughter, Georgina Nugent, the wife of the Rt. Hon. George Bankes; bequeathed by Ralph Bankes, 1981.
