Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), Frances Payne, Mrs William Woodley (1738-1813), by Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), 1758. A half-length oval portrait of the only daughter of Abraham Payne, of the Leeward Islands, facing, head in profile, wearing a white figured dress with gold stitching and dark green cloak over right shoulder. She married William Woodley on March 30, 1758 and this was painted as a marriage portrait. She was the mother of Frances, Mrs Henry II Bankes.
Provenance
by descent, through the sitter's daughter, Frances Woodley (1760 - 1823), Mrs. [Henry II] Bankes; bequeathed by (Henry John) Ralph Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents in 1981
