Caption
This is a half-length portrait of the father of Sir John Bankes, as a Doctor of Divinity, with a moustache, pointed beard, skull-cap, ruff and academic robes, at the age of 74 in 1643. One hand is resting on a ledge whilst he is holding a closed book with the other. It was painted by the same artist in the same year as his son’s portrait, also at Kingston Lacy.
