Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John II Bankes (1692-1772), MP, by Richard Roper (c.1730 – c.1775), signed and dated on back: Rd Roper Pinxt 1764. A three-quarter-length portrait, of John Bankes who had been MP for Corfe Castle from 1722-1741 but stood down for his brother, Henry. He is turned slightly to left, gazing at spectator, his right hand tucked into his red waistcoat edged with gold embroidery, over which he is wearing a pale mauve coat; tight grey wig; green curtain background.
Provenance
by inheritance through the sitter's brother, Henry II Bankes (1698 - 1776), and thence by descent; bequeathed by (Henry John) Ralph Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents in 1981
