Caption
The sitter was knighted in 1634 and is seen here at the age of 54, according to its inscription, a year before he died. He was the Attorney-General and Chief Justice of the Common Pleas between 1640-41. He purchased the Kingston estate in 1632–6, and Corfe Castle estate in 1635 where he lived. This is a reduced version of the three-quarter-length portrait in the National Portrait Gallery which was presented by Walter Ralph Bankes, in 1896.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Chief Justice Sir John Bankes, MP (1589-1644) by Gilbert Jackson (fl. 1621 - 1644), signed Gil Jack Fecit [?] and inscribed Aetat Suae. 54./ Anno Dom: 1643. A half-length portrait, as Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas, aged 54, turned slightly to right, facing spectator, wearing black skull cap, robe of crimson lined with white fur, a gold chain of knots with a rose between two portcullises, a black girdle about his waist, a white ruff, a moustache and a pointed beard.

Bequeathed by (Henry John) Ralph Bankes (1902 – 1981) to the National Trust, together with the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy and its entire contents in 1981
